Privacy

What runs on your browser, and your choice about it.

Calgary Communities YYC is a read-only publication supported by non-intrusive ads. Two third-party tools may run on your browser — and only if you accept on first visit.

Who is responsible

Calgary Communities YYC is operated from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The designated privacy officer is reachable at calgarycommunitiesyyc@gmail.com. Reach out with any question about this policy, to request access to information held about you, or to raise a concern.

What we collect

If you accept cookies on your first visit, two third-party tools run on your browser:

  • Google Analytics 4 — anonymised page views, session metadata, device and browser type. IP addresses are anonymised by configuration before they reach Google.
  • Google AdSense — cookies used to personalise the ads you see and to measure their reach. Ads sit between editorial sections, never inside a chart card or data table, and always carry an “Advertisement” label.

If you decline, neither tool fires on your device. Either way, this site itself does not store individual reader profiles, does not maintain an account system for public visitors, and does not log search queries (search runs client-side against a list of community names already in your browser).

Standard server logs on our hosting provider (Railway) record request metadata such as IP, user agent and path for operational purposes — debugging, abuse mitigation, uptime. That data is not linked to a profile and is rotated on the provider's retention schedule, typically within 30 days.

Where data goes

Cross-border disclosure — when Google Analytics or Google AdSense is active, the data those services collect is processed by Google on infrastructure that includes datacentres in the United States and other countries where Google operates. This means information about your visit may be stored or accessed outside Canada and may be subject to the laws of those jurisdictions.

We don't sell or share data ourselves. We don't add any cross-site tracking on top of what Google's services collect. We don't fingerprint browsers, and we don't pass reader information to any other vendor.

Third parties

Two third-party services may load on this site, only after consent:

Fonts are self-hosted via Next.js, so your browser never phones home to a font CDN. Charts and maps render from data already included in the page bundle.

Your choices

On your first visit a small banner asks for consent. Click Accept to allow the two third-party tools above, or Decline to refuse them. The site works identically either way.

To change your mind later, clear the ccyyc:consent key from your browser's site storage — the banner will reappear on the next visit. You can also opt out of personalised advertising across the web via Google's ad settings.

Access & correction — Canadian privacy law gives you the right to request what personal information we hold about you and to ask that it be corrected. As described above, this site doesn't maintain reader profiles, so in practice the request will return only what is held in server logs at the time of your message. Send the request to calgarycommunitiesyyc@gmail.com.

Children

This site is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact calgarycommunitiesyyc@gmail.com and we'll take appropriate steps.

Filing a complaint

If you believe we've mishandled your information, the first step is to contact us at calgarycommunitiesyyc@gmail.com. You also have the right to file a complaint with either authority below:

  • Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta — oipc.ab.ca
  • Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada — priv.gc.ca

Where the city data comes from

Everything you see on a community page is sourced from public datasets — primarily the City of Calgary Open Data Portal and the Calgary Police Service. The data describes places and policy, not people. There is no personal information about residents in our store.

Changes to this policy

If the site ever adds another third-party integration that touches public visitors, this page will be updated and the change will be noted in the version line below. There is no mailing list to opt out of because there is no list.
